Instances of natural child birth are few and far between in the modern day and age. Such was not the case back in the day, when women used to perform daily chores like grinding, sweeping, drawing water from the well etc. The performance of such physical activities was believed to facilitate easier child birth for women.
Technology has made life easier for people by reducing the amount of physical labour required for menial tasks. This however, has taken a toll on people in general and expectant mothers in particular, as the scope for physical activities has reduced to a marked extent.
In such a case, 'yoga mudra' comes as an effective method to maintain both the physical and mental health of pregnant women. There are many Yoga practitioners who specifically focus on training pregnant women in this particular form of yoga and Devika Purushotham is one of them. She has already trained several pregnant women and paved the way for a safe delivery and has therefore, laid the foundation for a healthy mother and child.
She has trained scores of expectant women over a period of 15 years in places like Raichur, Bengaluru, Belagavi etc. She is presently working as a yoga trainer at the Patanjali Yoga Academy in Mangalore.
The training for expectant women begins in the first trimester and spans over the nine months of pregnancy.
Devika believes that Yoga has the solution to all human ailments and the benefits of yoga are much more if a pregnant woman performs it under the guidance of a guru. Her expertise has brought her immense laurels including the third place at the South India level yoga competition and the title of 'Best Yoga Teacher'. She has also judged several state and national level yoga events.
She is ably supported by her husband Purushotham, a senior LIC agent. She travels with her husband to various places to teach yoga free of cost.
She took the onus of even training women prisoners in Raichur jail, which truly is a commendable move.
While the government of India is doing its bit to popularise Yoga, the same mission is being carried out people like Devika but, without all the noise.
