Episode 80 - Weekend Special - Dr. Naveen Rao on Free Cleft Surgery in Father Mullers Hospital

One out of 800 children are born with a cleft lip or cleft palate. Cleft lip and cleft palates are openings or splits in the upper lip, the roof of the mouth (palate) or both. This is the result of the incomplete closing of the facial structures during the development of the foetus. Cleft lips and palates are among the most common forms of birth defects and can be corrected by a series of surgeries. However, not everyone can afford these surgeries. Dr Naveen Rao, Professor, Oral Maxillo Facial surgeon and Cleft Project Director at Father Muller Medical College and Hospital, in association with Deutsche Cleft Kinder-Hilfe e.V. have been providing free cleft surgeries to children from economically backward sections of the society. The project was started in 2016 and so far, more than 1000 surgeries have been provided free of cost.
